2017: Year In Review

take a quick look back at a crazy awesome year

Posted by OBS Team on December 27th, 2017

What a year 2017 has been! Thank you so much to the more than 1,000 of you who have been involved this year. Our annual report will be out in early 2018, but here are a few more highlights from the year:

Education In Yida

The primary school you support in Yida Refugee Camp had an incredible year. In July, many of the students completed standardized testing in Mathematics and English. Not only did the students do well, they had the highest test scores in Yida. Several students came close to near perfect scores at 96% in both areas of studies! At the end of July, nearly 6,000 residents in Yida came together to celebrate these future leaders. This included parents, students, teachers, and community leaders.

Healthcare In The Nuba Mountains

This year, countless more lives were saved at Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. This is one of the only medical facilities in the region. This life-saving facility is led by American Dr. Tom Catena and a small local staff. Dr. Tom and the Sudanese staff refuse to leave and do their best to save lives in the midst of carnage and terror, treating as many as 400 patients a day at Mother of Mercy Hospital. Access to basic medical supplies is extremely limited and the hospital is frequently in financial crisis. The hospital depends entirely on fundraising and donations to treat the wounded and train the staff, and we're so humbled that you pitched in to support the team there.

The Final Relief Mission

In March 2017, your donations were used to help bring over 22,000Ibs of Corn Soya Blend nutritive supplement to more than 500 Nuba refugees in great need in Uganda.  Corn Soya Blend (CSB) is a fortified blended food used extensively by humanitarian agencies for decades in emergency situations due to it being rich in vitamins and minerals. This aid delivery provided CSB to this small community of Nuba refugees as they began moving towards sustaining themselves.

As we move into 2018, we will be closing down fundraising for emergency relief missions that target Nuba communities in need. Since this last relief mission, we have received zero requests from Sudanese partners concerning funding more in the future. Instead, we continue to hear more and more that our priority should be education. That is the direction we will continue to head in.

The Power of Storytelling

This year we released our first traveling photography installation that immerses viewers into what life is like in Yida Refugee Camp. In it's first year alone, the Yida Photography Exhibit has already raised over $20,000 at only a handful of showings. Additional showings are being booked for 2018 now.

And stay tuned, our next documentary film has a target release date of December 2018! We've already put a whopping 1,574 hours into this project, and there's plenty of work left to be done.

The people of Sudan are overcoming two of the greatest challenges facing humanity today: war and genocide. Operation Broken Silence is working to accelerate their ability to generate lasting change through storyelling and movement building, education and emergency response, and grassroots advocacy programs.
