4 Reasons To Attend Good People Good Beer

our 4th year is going to be the best yet!

Posted by OBS Team on July 14th, 2016

Our annual beer tasting fundraiser has drawn more attention this year than the past 3 years combined thanks to some great local coverage here in Memphis. We've received a lot of questions about the event and our work from potential new supporters, so we're summing up the reasons you should attend in this blogpost!

1. The Beer Is Crazy Awesome

We partner with a local liquor store every year and hand-select different high-gravity brews that are unique. Four out of the five beers each year cover a wide range of brewing styles and flavors, so there's plenty to choose from and talk about with your friends. Often times the beers we select are special-ordered just for this event!

An attendee favorite year after year is "the really weird beer," which basically boils down to our events team including one beer in the lineup that tastes as ridiculous as it sounds. Last year's was an Imperial Russian Stout that was brewed with ...wait for it... chai tea. Even we were surprised with how many people liked it!

2. This Event Supports A Vastly Underserved Cause

The crisis in Sudan is one of the biggest global issues in the world today, yet it receives very little attention. Right now, millions of people in Sudan are taking a stand against one of the most violent and oppressive governments in the world. More on that here

Operation Broken Silence is one of only two organizations in the world that is consistently using the power of documentary film and photography to show people what is happening in Sudan. We then use our media to inspire people to get involved by fundraising for and giving to our education and emergency relief programs on the ground in Sudan.

This year's event is particularly special because our media team just returned from the region! We'll be exhibiting new media throughout the evening and providing some updates on how effective our programs have recently been on the ground. And some members of our media team will be at the event, so you'll have the chance to ask them about their experiences on the ground!

3. There Is No Fundraising Goal!

This year we're dropping the traditional fundraising goal most charity events have. Why? Because we recognize that not everyone can make an additional donation right then and there. And that is perfectly okay!

Instead, we will have what we are calling a Commitment Goal. We will have a booth set up where you can learn more about us and commit to specific opportunities that will positively impact our programs and the people we serve on the ground in Sudan!

4. You Get To Dress Up!

When we started this event in 2012, we asked all of the event attendees to "dress to impress" as a theme. Our guests fell in love with the idea because there are so few affordable events in Memphis that you get to dress up for. We've done it every year since. And hey, it makes for a really special date night or hang out with a few friends!
