Join The Stand For Education Campaign

support the creation of a new high school in Yida Refugee Camp, South Sudan

Posted by OBS Team on August 17th, 2018

In 2011, Sudan's dictatorship unleashed a scorched-earth campaign of terror and death against the country's historic Nuba Mountains region, which sits on the border of Sudan and South Sudan.

The primary targets of government warplanes have been schools. Many Nuba teachers and students have fled to Yida Refugee Camp just across the border in South Sudan, where they have rebuilt schools with local resources and almost no outside support.

This conflict is now largely forgotten by the world. Years later, tens of thousands of children remain in Yida and other refugee camps waiting for a new classroom. Dozens of Nuba teachers are unable to work because there are no salaries. The situation is dire and, if something does not change soon, this situation will become an education catastrophe that echoes into future generations.

We stepped in and started meeting these teachers and children where they are in 2015. Working with a local Nuba partner, we started the Endure Primary School so that some Nuba teachers could begin working again and students could start returning to the classroom.

Nearly 2,500 students have attended the Endure Primary School in Yida since then, and the 12 teachers and students have achieved some incredible successes in that time. This only happened because ordinary people in our movement banded together and fundraised for the resources they deserve.

Unfortunately, once a child graduates from Grade 8 at the Endure Primary School, their studies end there. That is unacceptable. And that's where you come in.

Our goal is to meet this need for these ambitious students and teachers by sponsoring a new high school in Yida Refugee Camp. This can only be accomplished through our fundraising and alongside of our Nuba education partner.

All hope is not lost, but time is pressing. You can help make this high school a reality by creating your own fundraising page and asking your friends and family to give towards your goal. The funds you raise will help support the continued education of Nuba youth at this new high school.
