Loosening of Sudan Sanctions May Help Sudanese Activists

Posted by Mark Hackett on February 17th, 2015

The government of Sudan's severe human rights abuses and ongoing support of international terrorist organizations has long put the country in the U.S. Treasury department's sanctions crosshairs. The Sudan sanctions program began in 1997 and has expanded ever since. While most would agree that these sanctions have played a role in weakening the government of Sudan and further isolating war criminals, it has come with some bad side effects.

Ask Your Representative To #SupportHR1692

Posted by OBS Team on November 1st, 2014

H.R. 1692, the Sudan Peace, Security, and Accountability Act, has the potential to change outdated U.S. foreign policy towards Sudan. This important legislation will only work if you begin communicating with your Representative’s office and urge them to become a cosponsor. We’ve done actions similar to this in the past, but this time we’re taking a different approach. Instead of just calling your Representative’s local office, we want you to go there in person. We’ve broken this down into a few easy steps.

Adam's Story

Posted by OBS Team on August 10th, 2014

Here at Operation Broken Silence, we bring the stories of others to the world. We nourish relationships, inspire communities, and bring people together. Members of our movement have laughed together, cried together, and been there for each other through thick and thin. Volunteers come and go as seasons of life pass by, but the relationships always continue. Many of our past volunteers still keep up with us and each other. Our movement has transformed into our family.

It is with great sadness today that we bid farewell to an amazing member of our family.  But before we do that, we want to tell you a little bit about him. This is Adam’s story.

Report: Lost Generation of Sudan

Posted by OBS Team on July 5th, 2014

A new generation of Sudanese children, this time from the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile areas are walking alone out of the conflict zone, now navigating the crisis in South Sudan, and arriving in makeshift refugee camps that have few or no services available to meet their needs. This flow of unescorted children began in 2011 and continues today.

This report is based on 37 interviews Operation Broken Silence (OBS) staff conducted between May 22 – June 1, 2014 in South Sudan. Interviewees included children, community leaders, and Nuba-based humanitarian actors who could speak to the issues children impacted by this conflict face.

Report: Abandoned

Posted by OBS Team on April 4th, 2014

In a new report, “Abandoned,” following a March 2014 End Nuba Genocide Coalition relief operation to Kodok refugee camp near the border of Sudan and South Sudan, Operation Broken Silence provides visual evidence that the crisis in South Sudan is further deepening the humanitarian issues for refugees who are trapped between two conflicts. For refugees closer to direct ground conflict in South Sudan and those not on the beaten paths of current humanitarian efforts, the 2014 rainy season could spell disaster for those most vulnerable such as children under the age of five, the elderly, and the ill.

This important field update also notes that a lack of vaccination campaigns, educational supplies and teachers, and international willpower to bring relief to some of these refugees trapped on the border will have increasingly negative long-term effects for the future of these people.

Field Update: Land of the Hungry

Posted by OBS Team on July 1st, 2013

In a new field update, “Land of the Hungry,” following a May 2013 End Nuba Genocide Coalition relief operation to one of these areas, Operation Broken Silence provides additional visual evidence that the Sudanese government’s violent crimes against civilian populations in South Kordofan and continued denial of humanitarian assistance in areas controlled by the SPLM-N has resulted in severe malnutrition and worsening food security that is nearing emergency levels.
