Storytelling & Movement Building

telling Sudanese stories and mobilizing people around the world for action

Introduction

Despite the severity of the crisis in Sudan, the Sudanese people and the issues they face receive little to no media attention. On the rare occassion stories from Sudan are covered in the media, the country is often presented as a hopeless place with zero solutions. Not only is this extremely unfair, it is also simply not true.

Through the immense power of documentary film and photography, we give the Sudanese people an opportunity to speak for themselves and inspire people around the world to get involved in on-the-ground programs led by local Sudanese leaders. Our stunning media projects showcasing their stories mobilize people for action, as well as prove where every dollar you raise and give goes.

Here are our current Storytelling and Movement Building projects:

The Yida Photography Exhibit

The 313 breathtaking images featured in this traveling exhibit are part of a collection of 4,535 photos taken in Yida Refugee Camp, South Sudan by Operation Broken Silence’s photographers. This immersive experience focuses on persecuted and oppressed Sudanese from the Nuba Mountains of Sudan who have fled to Yida. Their homeland has been besieged in a genocidal war by Sudan's dictatorship since 2011. The exhibit takes audiences into what life is like in the refugee camp, introduces them to the crisis in Sudan, who refugees are, and different aspects of Nuba culture, and provides tangible ways to get involved in supporting the Sudanese people through fundraising and giving.

What A Week In Sudan Newsletter

The "What A Week In Sudan" newsletter highlights an important and overlooked story from Sudan and is delivered straight to your inbox once a week for you to read. It's a good mix of hard news, some light humor, and most importantly: context. We also include a link to our blog where you can find more important stories from Sudan and a few ways to get involved.

The Good People Good Beer Gala

The Good People Good Beer Gala is our annual event that benefits the Endure Primary School in Yida Refugee Camp, South Sudan. A modern take on what is a traditionally stuffy nonprofit event, the Gala takes place every spring in Memphis, TN and brings together our supporters from around the country, as well as people learning about Sudan for the first time. The theme for the Gala changes annually, which means the selection of tasting brews, food, and dress code changes with it.

Eden's Run 5K

Eden's Run 5K is our annual family-friendly run/walk event that benefits the Endure Primary School in Yida Refugee Camp, South Sudan. This timed race was started and managed years ago by then-high school student Eden Siskind and benefited Sudanese refugee camps. Eden passed off the race to us in 2014 when she headed off to college, and we've been faithfully continuing this fundraising run ever since.

How Well Has Our Storytelling Built A Movement?

It has been an amazing journey so far. As of June 2018, our Storytelling projects (films, campaign videos, photography, and events) has built our movement into 16 countries with 4,000+ active supporters who are empowering the Sudanese people. When we show people what is happening in Sudan, they respond with action. And we're only just getting started.

Upcoming: The Yida Documentary Film (2019)

Yida is a new documentary film that examines life in Yida Refugee Camp, South Sudan, where tens of thousands of Sudanese live after fleeing their government's genocidal war just across the border in the Nuba Mountains. This film is currently in post-production and will be released to the public in 2019.

Upcoming: The Movement Podcast (2019)

The Movement is an upcoming podcast from our organization about the crisis in Sudan, our mission, and you: our movement. Every other week, our staff will tell the story of our collective journey through it all: from the war-torn frontlines and refugee camps of Sudan alongside of our local partners to the halls of Congress to our movement’s living rooms. This podcast will launch Summer 2019.
