The Mission
For those who do not know, this year Operation Broken Silence has chosen charity:water as the beneficiary of our fundraising. In short, charity:water’s focus is to help raise the funds to dig clean water wells around the world, particularly in Africa. In African conflict zones such as Uganda, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, access to clean water is lacking for millions of people.
This means that not only does preventable disease affect people that are forced to drink dirty water, but also that women and children are forced to leave the more secure environment of local communities to walk hours to get dirty water. Along the way, women are at risk of being raped and children are put at risk for being abducted and forced to fight in some of the world’s deadliest wars.
By raising money and helping charity:water dig wells directly in communities so that women and children do not have to leave the safety of the community, we can help to save and transform lives. Clean water wells also mean that children can focus on their schoolwork and parents can work more, creating micro-economic opportunities that will continue helping the community for years to come. Our Call to Memphis Businesses
We have always been impressed with the charity Memphis businesses so often times pour out in times of need. Many Memphis businesses are still collecting money to help aid the earthquake victims of Haiti, while others focus on raising money and donating time to local groups. Because of this, we want to offer Memphis businesses a very unique opportunity that benefits everyone involved.
We recently built a charity:water informational kit to help us raise awareness and funds for charity:water. What we are asking of Memphis businesses is that they would host this informational kit by donating a small section of their retail space to it, allowing the Memphis public to learn about this extremely important issue and offering everyone the opportunity to donate and help save lives. The kit can be wall-mounted or set-up several different ways and takes up very little space
The general idea is that the business will host the informational kit for 7 days or more. Employees can then ask customers upon checkout if they would be interested in making a $5 cash donation, 100% of which will go directly to building clean water wells. After the 7 day period, the Operation Broken Silence staff will remove the informational kit from the business or allow it to stay longer if the business wishes it to! Funds will be collected at a minimum of every 7 days.
How It Helps the Business
We believe good deeds should be rewarded. If your business hosts the informational kit we will do several things for you:
- Post to our website information about your business and how much money you raised for charity:water
- Place daily posts to our Twitter and Facebook accounts information about how customers can donate at your store when they are shopping
- Reach out to our local media contacts so they can report on your charity efforts and your products
- Give you your own fundraising page under the OBS charity:water group so people can see how much money the business raised as well as donate online. This will also show you the exact location your money raised will be sent to build a clean water well.
In short you get free publicity, recognition for your work, and a new connection point with your customers.
