Resources on Sudan for the classroom and the curious

Operation Broken Silence is on the frontlines of the crisis in Sudan and the hearts of refugee camps. Our team studies history and international law. We know better than most that genocide and armed conflict are difficult topics to navigate in the classroom and everyday life.

The resources found below are crafted and selected with input from professors and teachers, academic researchers, students, and some of our own supporters. Whether you are preparing a lecture for your class or are a student writing a paper —or just have a wonderfully curious personality— you’ve come to the right place.

We strongly encourage educators to review these materials before using them in the classroom. Some of these resources may not be appropriate for younger children, specifically 7th grade and below. For more up-to-date information on Sudan and our mission, please sign up for our email list.

Sudan Historical Background

Women & Conflict In Sudan

Violence touches everyone in conflict, but women and girls face particular gendered violence as part of genocides and based on their national, ethnic, racial, or religious identity.

Get Your Class Involved!

Operation Broken Silence is building a global movement to empower Sudanese heroes in the war-torn periphery regions of Sudan, including teachers and students in Yida Refugee Camp. Teachers just like Chana, who you can meet below.

Many classrooms who use our resources are moved to help. One of the best ways to advance learning and directly engage is hosting an in-person fundraiser or online campaign for heroes in Sudan! Please reach out if you’d like to get involved. You can also request a speaker for your fundraiser.

Photo: Educator Megan Stotz used some of our resources with her 6th grade class in Pennsylvania. Her students went on to raise $1,375! She says “Hands down the best thing I did for my students this year was to get involved with Operation Broken Silence. The level of empathy my students felt and maintained came largely in part from working with OBS.” Learn more here.

Individual Involvement

The Endure Primary and Renewal Secondary Schools we sponsor in Yida are run entirely by Sudanese teachers who serve over 750 students a year. Your gift will help pay educator salaries, deliver school supplies and more.

If you can’t donate right now, we encourage you start a fundraising page and ask friends and family to give!

We are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. Your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law.
